EMS providers make critical decisions in the first minutes of a trauma call, but they rarely find out what happens after they hand off care. This course follows the trauma patient from the scene to the trauma bay and through hospitalization, recovery, and discharge.
The course is built around a case of a husband and wife injured in the same high-speed motor vehicle crash. One arrives critically unstable. The other is awake, talking, and appears stable. You'll follow both patients through the trauma bay, CT imaging, surgery, intensive care, step-down care, and rehabilitation, and see how prehospital decisions affected each patient's outcome.
What you'll learn:
- How the trauma team prepares for your patient before arrival, and why early notification matters
- When to consider air medical transport and how to choose the right destination
- How to make a trauma notification through MICCOM and how it activates the trauma team
- How to give a clear, organized MIST report at handoff
- How field triage and mass casualty decisions affect patients and the regional trauma system
- Why a normal blood pressure and an alert patient don't rule out serious internal bleeding, especially in patients on blood thinners
- Key prehospital priorities, including hemorrhage control, whole blood resuscitation, preventing hypothermia, and spinal motion restriction
This course is designed forany prehospital providers who want to see the full path of trauma care and how their work in the field shapes patient outcomes.
